A Journey Through 175 Years of History
Founded in 1850, Woodlawn Cemetery is a historic garden cemetery located less than five miles from downtown Boston in Everett, Massachusetts. Established by a group of prominent civic and business leaders, Woodlawn was created as a peaceful, beautifully landscaped setting where families could honor and remember their loved ones.
For more than 175 years, Woodlawn has remained dedicated to preserving its historic grounds while continuing to provide compassionate, professional cemetery services. The cemetery’s carefully maintained landscape features mature trees, gardens, and distinctive architecture that reflect the beauty and tradition of a classic New England garden cemetery.

1851
Land Purchased
80-acre parcel of land was purchased that was primarily situated in Malden, Massachusets.
July 2, 1851
Consecrated
The exercises consisted of a chant of Psalm 23, a reading of the scriptures by Rev. J. P. Langworthy of Chelsea, a prayer by William Ives Budington, an original hymn by Rev. J. H. Clinch of Boston, an address by George Edward Ellis, a hymn by H. W. Fuller, and a prayer and benediction by Rev. Levi Tucker of Boston
1868
Expansion
By 1868, half of Woodlawn’s burial plots had been sold, so the cemetery expanded by acquired an adjoining 75-acre property. A greenhouse was constructed.
1910
New Chapel
The concrete and granite Gothic revival building was designed by Loring & Phipps. It took a year to build.
1988
Construction of Patton Hall
Alongside with the new reception facility, Woodlawn Cemetery refurbished the chapel.
